Background
SHIH Uganda (Slum Habitants Initiative Hub Uganda) was started in 2012 and was registered on 31th July, 2015. It’s a fully registered Non-Governmental Organization under the laws of Uganda with registration No. 11474. As a prerequisite for NGOs operating in Uganda. SHIH UGANDA was established and registered by Nambatya Jane aka Janice with a vision of helping people initiate their own sustainable Development through Skilling, Economic Mindset change, Saving and credit, Marketing and Employment management, Early childhood development, entrepreneurship , improved WASH, economic empowerment as a way of eradicating and preventing poverty the root cause of all problems and situations and many more.

The word SLUM according to us refer to the situations, environment, events , history, mindset that congests an individual to the extent that each turns into a wall/shack that without help and initiation she or he cannot break through the congestion to better him/herself. To us it is more of a virtual than physical although we deal with both. We award certificates after training and we are DIT(Directorate of Industrial Training) Accredited training organization (DIT center No. MAC/1267)

Our General Objective

The overall objective of SHIH Uganda is to create economically empowered and healthy(WASH) community with improved support services, through research, partnerships with other civil society organizations and Skilled trained community members to initiate and sustain their own development towards eradication of unemployment, absolute Poverty and related problems, economically bridge the gap and inequalities between the rich man communities and the urban/rural poor communities and as a distraction for the youth from engaging in unhealthy activities and utilize their idle time with our bottom top approach employed. We Attack poverty form the grassroots by skilling or adding practical sense to what children study in class by skilling schools and high education institutions, support and develop young entrepreneurs, and facilitate professionals with business skills to create multiple incomes and jobs.This is effected through :

  1. SHISACO anew face of savings and credit tailor made to benefit members not to choke them and typical bottom top approach.
  2. Learning something new daily and income generation, our core skilling program in more than 50 hands on skills in instant income generating skills.
  3. Multiple streams of income campaigns to supplement the main income and assign each need an income to cater for it
  4. Wealth creation trainings, business and finance management teachings , inspirations and training.
  5. Value addition, branding, Packing, self branding, business development, creativity and innovations to develop existing skills and be able to compete in the market and also meet the trends
  6. The SHI Marketing Concept of direct marketing strategy of going straight to the Market instead of waiting for the market to come to you, embracing the huge rural market by going beyond the production centers.
  7. Family production, genetic skilling, study as you generate incomes, support young entrepreneurs and development.
  8. Entrepreneurship/Business training and coaching.

We offer a platform for mindset change, creativity, Innovation, skilling, value addition, marketing, uplift and spearhead a sustainable social economic development in slums, refugee communities, urban/rural and church communities children, women, youth, elderly, through livelihood/skilling trainings, charity market days, urban farming, outreaches, inclusive employment for the youth, early childhood and late childhood development classes, addiction is not a disability program, Talent Development Clubs and Trainings, Work without Play Clubs and Old is Gold Clubs.

Mindset change (doing things differently and changing the way we look at things), innovation, initiation, Creativity, talent development, Partnerships, Value addition, showing Love to all, Non-judgmental attitudes and not looking at their outside being but what the person can do or lay hands on regardless of his/her situation and the environment the person living in that can improve, change his/her world and life for good.

Our Operations & Coverage

Currently we have managed to train and skill in 25 Districts in Uganda. A total of over 10000 people have benefited since we started. The districts include; Mbale, Manafa, Jinja, Busia, Kapchowra, Tororo, Soroti in the East. In the North we are active in Gulu, Nebi, Arua, Lira, Mbarara, Kabale, Nsinjiro, Fort portal, Kyegegwa, Kampala, Wakiso, Entebbe, Ngoma, Kiboga, Mubende, Sembabule, Luwero, Masaka districts and Butambala etc We intend to roll out our project activities to other districts as soon as we receive support in those districts SHI acquires mandate from the district authorities to permit her work in those areas. We are seeking partnership to roll out Research and implementation of Guttering and Water Harvesting solution to flooding of slum areas, Elderly documentary of the Slum Stories and Airspace land sharing slum upgrading program.
